About two-thirds of all infectious diseases in humans have their origins in animals (Jones et al. 2008). Land mismanagement, habitat loss, overexploitation of wildlife, and human-induced climate change have created multiple pathways for pathogens to transmit from wildlife to domestic animals and humans, affecting our health and well-being. If we do not change our behavior today, if we do not learn from this pandemic, similar multidimensional crises with environmental, health, and socioeconomic impacts are likely to recur.
