Uitto, J.I.; O. Garcia and J. Vaessen (2014): Making M&E More ‘Impact-oriented': Illustrations from the UN, in: Befani, B.; C. Barnett and E. Stern (eds.) "Special Issue: Rethinking Impact Evaluation for Development", IDS Bulletin Vol. 45, Brighton: IDS.

As a follow up to a workshop on evaluation in development, held at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) in March 2014, the research institute published a special issue bulletin which focusses on the main findings of this event. As IDS states in their announcement, the workshop "aimed to sketch out a research and practice agenda to meet increasing demands for evidence about successful programs and projects." This publication points out the need on how to make better use of evaluative evidence to have a real impact on the lives of the poorest and most marginalized. A question which becomes more dominant, especially facing the upcoming ‘Year of evaluation' in 2015 and the general challenges of a post-MDG/post-2015 world.

Juha I. Uitto, director of the Independent Evaluation Office of the Global Environmental Facility, contributed together with Jos Vaessen and Oscar Garcia to the latest issue with the article "Making M&E More ‘Impact oriented': Illustration from the UN." This article scrutinizes the challenges of institutionalizing impact evaluation and exposes common challenges in monitoring and evaluation functions
