Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF)

The GBFF was launched in August 2023 as part of the international Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and is managed by the GEF. This fund was created to support countries in putting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into action-a global plan aimed at protecting nature and restoring biodiversity.

The GBFF provides new grant funding and low-interest financing across eight key action areas focused on nature conservation. Projects are selected based on how well they contribute to global environmental goals, how they align with each country’s biodiversity plans, and how they support fair geographic distribution. The fund also places strong emphasis on working with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) and gives special attention to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

To encourage cooperation with international financial institutions (IFIs), the GBFF sets specific targets across its funding portfolio. Funding is distributed through competitive application rounds, with limits on how much each country can receive-up to twice the amount of their allocation under the System for Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR). Monitoring, evaluation, and other operational policies follow the standards already in place under the GEF.
