The 8th African evaluation Association (AfrEA) International Conference "Evaluation of the SDGs: Opportunities and Challenges for Africa" will take place from March 27-30, 2017 in Kampala, Uganda. The IEO will participate in two workshop sessions:

Climate Change and Resilience: Evaluation and Learning


Wednesday 29 March, 17:00-18:00 local time, Room 18

The session will tackle initiatives to build and strengthen learning programs on climate and resilience within grant-making institutions, in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation.

Dennis Bours,GEF IEO Evaluation Officer, will present how the Sixth Comprehensive Evaluation of the GEF (OPS6) provides summative and formative evaluative evidence to improve the performance of GEF activities. Joe Dickman, CIF Senior Learning and Evaluation Officer, will discuss the new Learning and Evaluation Initiative which promotes practical, applied learning from evaluations. Nancy McPherson, Rockefeller Foundation Evaluation Director, and Roy Mayega, ResilientAfrica Network, will reflect on their experience on the Resilience Measurement, Evidence and Learning Community of Practice.

Evaluating Climate Change in Relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Opportunities and Challenges


Friday 31 March, 8:30-10:00 local time, Room 18

The panel will offer insights on leveraging and building upon synergies in evaluation of the Paris Agreement on climate change and the SDGs, and linking climate mitigation and adaptation efforts to the SDG evaluation agenda.

Rob van den Berg, Senior Advisory Group member of CIF's Learning and Evaluation Initiative, will share his insights on the SDG climate evaluation nexus. Patrick Kibaya, Manager of Climate Change Adaptation and ICT (CHAI) project hosted at the Ministry of Water, Government of Uganda will comment on examples and opportunities for linking evaluation of climate goals and SDGs in Uganda. Dennis Bours, GEF IEO Evaluation Officer, will present how the OPS6 evaluations relate to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Jo Puri, Head of the Independent Evaluation Office of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), will discuss vision of GCF evaluations, and opportunities and challenges in light of the SDGs.
